Every Record I Own - Day 282: Cymande s/t
Cymande were a London-based soul/funk group comprised of musicians from the West Indies back in the early ‘70s. I first heard of them through John Sherman of Red Fang, who played this album backstage during our European tour together last autumn. I scooped up this reissue LP at a small DJ shop a few days later in Nottingham. Since then, it seems like I’ve been hearing people talk about Cymande on a regular basis, as if they’d been a hot topic of discussion for years, and I’d somehow not noticed. Apparently it was widely sampled album in the golden era of hip hop and a crossover hit with a lot of early post-punk bands (I’ve seen them pop up on the excellent @postpunkindustrial blog from time to time).
As with most recent purchases, I don’t have a whole lot to say about this album other than that it’s fantastic and I’ve gotten a lot of spins out of it in a relatively short period of time. The season is almost over, but it’s not too late to give this one a chance as a late-entry summer jam.
